Question Asked: Hi - I do believe this is poison ivy but I wanted to send it in and make sure. I have been battling it for quite a while around the house and would like to make sure I'm not wasting my time. I have several pictures of different examples that are similar. I live in Lexington, SC. These vines are growing freestanding, on the ground, and climbing trees, ect. Thanks for anything you can tell me.
Answer: Hi David -
In the first 3 pictures, the predominate plant is poison ivy. I blieve there may be another vine or other type of plant mixed in but I don't see enough detail to know if it's part of the poison ivy plant or part of another plant. In the 3rd picture from the top, you can see some leaflets which are not shaped as we would expect - these are more lance-like (long, thin) and not the egg shape we normally see. If you get a close up look, is this part of the same plant or a different plant? There are quite a number of 3 leaflet plants out there.
In the 4th picture with the fence post, that is virginia creeper. You can see the palmated leaves (leaflets arranged resembling the palm of the hand) and the 3 to 5 leaflets. Virginia Creeper is a woody vine which grows in similar conditions as poison ivy. It too is an invasive plant. In the 5th picture from the top, we see both poison ivy and virginia creeper. I'd love to have a closer view of the plants (picture id's are interesting to do...) just to be sure, but the leaflet arrangements lead me to believe that we are looking at 2 separate vines. The virginia creeper is the 5 leaflet vine and the poison ivy is the 3 leaflet vine. In the last 2 pictures, I just see virginia creeper.
