Question Asked: I live in Iowa and recently found this growing under some grape vines on my back fence. I have started to spray it with an equivalent of Round-Up (a local product). The leaves are begining to curl. I am one of those people who is terribly allergic to poison ivy. At least 2 medical visits in the past 2 years were due to the stuff (i.e., serious blisters, infection, fever, etc.). Thanks for any help!
Answer: Hi Todd -
Though there isn't a close up, I believe that you are looking at poison ivy under the grape on the fence. This is a favorite spot for the poison ivy vine to grow as it provides excellent support. You can clearly make out the grape leaves along the top of the fence. Under that though are trifoliate leaves (3 leaflets on a leaf). The middle leaflet is on a longer stem, the side leaflets are on a short to nearly non-existent stem, the leaflets are egg shaped. All of these are indicators of poison ivy. I'd love to see a close-up to get a good look at the vine for a more positive id but I think it's pretty safe to say that this is poison ivy. Interesting how the leaflets on these vines is more uniform in shape then some of the other plants we've seen from other areas of the country. |
