Question Asked: These images were taken along our driveway in Michigan's beautiful Keweenaw Peninsula. Are the plants poison ivy? This is a new "crop" of plants along our driveway; first time ever seen. There are several patches of this growing in an area roughly 30' x 30'.

Answer: Hi James - first let me thank you for the beautiful pictures. The angles and quality of shot are excellent. It is not poison ivy but unfortunately, I've not been able to find it in my guide books and I haven't come across it in my travels. Here are the traits which id the plant as not poison ivy:

  • 5 leaflets per leaf
  • Leaves whorled (notice how the leaves "sprout" from the top of the plant)
  • Bronze color - I suspect these leaves don't change color
  • Fleshy trunk

I suspect this is some sort of wild flower but am uncertain. It certainly is a handsome plant - I will keep looking to see if I can properly id this. Anyone else know what this is?
