Question Asked: These pictures show what I think is poision ivy growing in a bed of domestic ivy. It was taken in Tidewater Virginia this morning (5/21/03). I am wondering if poisin ivy is more likely to grow in an area with another vine such as domestic ivy.
Answer: Steve - you are right about the poison ivy. Your first picture is great as you can see the aerial rootlets. The ideal conditions the domestic ivy creates is probably a factor here. The bed with this ivy is not likely to be tilled or disturbed often. Plants get an opportunity to take root. Also, the ground will stay moister longer as its shaded by all that vine. Great growing conditions.
FYI on that domestic - it looks like English Ivy which is 1) an invasive plant and 2) has some toxic properties including causing dermatitis in sensitive individuals. If you'd like to know more, go to PCA Alien Plant Working Group - english ivy |
