| Update: Tuna was a 'red herring,' so to speak. No relation to the hives. I've had a lot of time to think, lying on my back with ice packs all over, and realized that the hives were also present in my 2010 episode, but the poison ivy rash was so spread out, it was hard to tell which was which. This time the poison ivy was localized on my right forearm, so it was easier to tell that the hives on my upper arms, thighs, and chest were a secondary reaction. Went back to Dr. this a.m. and now have a Rx for Prednisone, oral. Am looking forward to some relief after a day or two. Dr. had never come across such a secondary reaction before, but after ruling out allergies to laundry detergent, medicines, food, sun exposure, and other common causes of hives, he concluded that the hives were a delayed reaction to the poison ivy. I asked him to make a note in my chart, so that if I ever come back with poison ivy, I can go on Prednisone earlier. So far, Prednisone side effects have been limited to hyperactivity: it feels like being overcaffeinated, but it has only been 6 hours. It's a ten-day course so I don't know what will happen next, but I'm hopeful that side-effects will be limited 'cause I don't remember any horrible side effects from the course of Prednisone I took in 2010. Dr. says it is o.k. to use Benadryl, ice packs, and Aveeno oatmeal baths for topical relief. Cold showers and A/C are helpful, too. Dr. agrees that the original poison ivy rash is far enough in the healing process to discontinue Mupirocin and Triacinolone. |
