I can attest to the immunity it provides. My grandmother lived with us on our farm after our grandfather passed away. As children (3 boys) we all got PI from time to time being in the woods. We were in the woods one day with her and grousing about getting poison ivy when she pulled 3 leaves from a plant, told us "the sign is in the ....(something astrological)" and made us eat the leaves. We were 7, 6 and 4 yrs old and more afraid of her than the poison ivy. None of us has ever had it since. We all enjoy time in the garden and woods without worrying about it. With that said, I would NEVER tell my children to eat a poison ivy leaf. I do not have the knowledge, or grit, she had and with my luck would probably kill one of them. Of course, if the 15 yr old doesn't shape up, that may happen anyway. But that's for another day.
