Hello everybody,
I fist got a small rash on my underarm near my tricep, but being a 16 year old boy.. I didn't think about what it could be and thought it would pass. Boy was I wrong! About a week later I woke up with it all over my stomach, face (eyes+ears), and the original underarm. At this point it was pretty clear that I had poison ivy.
After a quick trip to the doctor I returned home with two prescription topical ointments; Hydrocortisone Ointment USP, 2.5% (apply face only) and Triamcinolone Acetonide Ointment USP, 0.1% (apply to body only). I applied each 2-4 times a day along with 50mg's of benadryl in the morning, after school, and before bed.
After a week of the above and many other home remedies, ranging from baking soda/oatmeal baths to rubbing alcohol etc, I had seen little to no improvement at all.
So after a few more days of suffering through this unbelievable itch I contacted my doctor once again and was prescribed Prednisone (the normal 60mg 5days, 40mg 5days, 20 mg 5days). He advised I take my first dosage as soon as possible and thanks to their 'great' pharmacy that happened to be around 10pm... I woke up the next morning and WOW!!! it seemed to be drying and fading away. So I took my next dosage, applied the ointment, took 50mg of Benadryl and went to school. Half way through the day after being told that my face looked like a red swollen balloon I went home and everywhere that had a previous rash had returned at least 3 times as bad and twice, if not more, as big. My eyes were so swollen I could hardly stand it. I stayed home the rest of the day and my poison ivy seemed to calm down.
So the next morning (this morning) I woke up and my rashes seemed to be mildly irritated, but I can't afford to miss school, so I took the next dosage of prednisone, ointments, benadrly and went to school. I made it about 50 mins until I had to silently pack my things a fast walk to the nurses office.
Now the original rash has spread at least 3-5 times its orinal size within about 3 weeks. From a bit on the back of my arm, entire face, and a bit on my stomach to BOTH OF MY ENTIRE ARMS, HANDS, FACE, NECK, EARS, EYES, ENTIRE STOMACH (which seems to be spreading all the way to my back now), GROIN and UPPER/INNER LEGS.
The rash is seemly getting worse by the day. Its been nearly 3 weeks and I can't find one thing to help... So if there is anything I could try still PLEASE tell me.
Some of the tings I have tried:
-Cleaning the rashes with soap twice a day
-Ointments
-Baking soda bath and paste
-bleach
-rubbing alcohol
-oatmeal bath and paste
-prednisone
