Poison ivy challenges my commitment to maintenance of native biodiversity. I have heard two ecological arguments in favor of poison ivy: (1) birds eat the seeds (thereby spreading the plant, incidentally); (2) it stabilizes sand and reduces erosion by wind.
As far as I know, nothing is dependent solely on this species. Other plants fill the same ecological roles.
