My high school biology teacher told the class a story of a girl in his neighborhood they called "Poison Ivy Nancy" because she, who was apparently not allergic to Poison Ivy, would chase the other kids around while holding a vine. One day, one of the other kids dared her to eat it--so she did. She was hospitalized for quite some time during which she almost died (the other kids felt pretty guilty too). Afterwards, she was hyper-allergic to it and had to be careful whenever she went outside. He was pretty serious when he told us this story, so I'm pretty sure he did not make this one up, and it is a good reminder to not play with fire (or poison ivey).
