"Scratching or breaking the blisters does not spread the dermatitis, since the vesicles contain the body�s own fluids. However, organisms present on the fingers can infect the skin, and harsh scratching can excoriate the skin to produce scarring. The rash seems to spread since different areas of the skin react differently, perhaps owing to a different antigen load or inherent factors such as extrinsic aging due to sun exposure."
