Dear Carolyn, I am so sorry for your family. Unfortunately all the hard work you did, and the suffering you are going through, was in vain as the Poison Ivy will grow back as you did not kill the roots. Please call or visit your new neighbor, and show them your rash. It could be possible they are unaware they have this in their yard, and that it is creeping into your yard. Once they see what has happened to you & baby, they hopefully will be compassionate enough to eradicate it from their yard. They must kill the roots because the plant is perennial. I read a safer way to kill it (without sprays) is to spread Rock Salt (like you would use on icy sidewalks) on the plants & water so it will suck it up in the root system & die. Wait until the plants are brown & shriveled. Even when dead, you must be careful though as you can still get an outbreak from their oils. If you cover the plant with large plastic garbage bags to grasp to remove from the ground, the oil cannot get into the air and find your skin. Also, wear rubber gloves when you do this. Do not burn or compost. Throw out in regular trash. Share this info with your neighbor as they will have to apply a killer to their property where the plants are coming from in the first place. If you have any more questions, feel free to email me. I hope your rash will not get too severe. [email protected] |
