Hot water was the only thing that helped me when I had poison oak. My doctor said it was to late for prednisone to be effective by the time I saw him. I did try Tecnu and Caladryl but I can't say these did much to help and I finally stopped using them.

Hot water treatment (5-8 or so times a day) felt absolutely great and stopped the itchiness for quite awhile. BIG relief. No one warned me not to use hot water to help with the itchiness. If they had, I think I would just have kept on with the hot water, that's how much it helped. I disagree with your doctor's claim that hot water promotes the itchiness. At least for me, the opposite was true.
