I have heard lots of remedies - some bizarre, some beleivable. The stuff that I find beleivable for prevention is:
1)avoid contact entirely 2) wash with either Technu or "Fels-Naptha" heavy duty laundry soap - within hours after contact using cold water as to not open the poors. 3) cover exposed skin before venturing out with either deoderant or a product called "Ivy-Stop" or something like that, I found it at Snyder Drugs the other day - the theory is it puts a 'protective barrier on the skin'.

I have obviously not followed any of the prescribed steps as last weekend I dug hole in the middle of poison ivy for an outhouse... and am covered head to toe in the worst PI case I have ever had... and now am trying to learn as much as I can because this stuff is miserable! Live and learn I guess..

I was told by a dermatalogist (the last time I had PI) - is that you become more suceptable each time you get it (become less immune I guess would be a better way of phrasing it.) I don't know if it is true or not.
