My father's uncle made all the youngsters that work on his farm eat poison ivy at the beginning of each season. My Dad said that nothing happened to them after eating and they didn't catch poison ivy.
He never asked us to eat the stuff and never saw him eat any. I might add that the Uncle name was Ripley (not the famous one).
I'm not saying anyone should eat poison ivy, just an old story I felt like sharing.
