If you develop symptoms on the face, genital area, or anal area you should see a doctor. Past the initial discomfort you are at greater risk of secondary infection once the blisters appear and you should be on antibiotics. Having your mouth or anus close up is not a pretty sight. A trip to an allergist for a DepoMedrol or Decadron shot and a script for prednisone as soon as symptoms occur will greatly minimize a systemic flare-up to other parts of the body and clear up of all symptoms in as little as 3-5 days is not uncommon. The long acting effects of the shot will prevent allergic reactions for up to 6 weeks. In the summer when I do yard work and outdoor activities I get a shot every 6 weeks or so to prevent reactions and if any occur a weeks dose of prednisone prevents the rash from spreading. Cleaning the affected are with rubbing alcohol and applying an over the counter cortizone type cream 4-5 times a day helps heal the lesions quickly.
Some doctors even provide free samples of the medications you will need. Total cost estimate for office visit, shot, and cost of prednisone for 7 days is $75-$100. If you need antibiotics ask (beg) for samples. If youre not on insurance the script for the best antibiotics like Tequin could be $100 or more. If you're going strictly over the counter you will need at a minimum an antihistamine like benadryl or zyrtec and something to treat the topical symptoms like a cortisone cream and oatmeal soap or rubbing alcohol to dry out the lesions. Going over the counter you are saving a few dollars but the treatments are fairly ineffective and the allergic reaction will still last for up to 3 weeks or more and spread to other parts of the body. The key is to halt your bodies allergic reactions asap not just treat the topical symptoms which will only get worse. Personally Id like to have the use of my penis back as soon as possible.
