Yes, the steroids do have a few side effects... but they seem to be short-lived when a person only takes them ocassionally.
I have just finished my 3rd consective round of the steroids already this Spring and finally am clearing up. The lesions themselves were not so bad, but the facial, neck and throat swelling were pretty scary for me this time.
Sounds like you had a bad outbreak - take care of yourself!
