Yes. As Brian pointed out, if the vine has nothing to cling to it will form a small shrub (about 18" to 2' in height). Also, depending on region, you may be seeing Toxicodendron Rydbergii which is poison ivy which grows only as a bush or shrub. This plant gets to be a few feet in height (sorry don't have my guide handy to give you a more accurate sizing but if memory serves it goes to about 4 or 5 ft). If you do an images search on Google for Toxicodendron Rydbergii you'll get a number of pictures returned for viewing - note some of them are just Toxicodendron Radicans (our most common poison ivy).
In a forest setting, I've seen Toxicodendron Radicans grow up just as you describe. I have a number of pictures of this plant that I haven't put online yet but plan to do shortly. It looks just like a single stalk and there may be several in the area. |
