First off - it's not likely to be poison sumac as that plant is highly elusive living mainly in bogs / swamps. Also, the reaction is pretty much the same for poison ivy or poison sumac. Both plants have urushiol oil in resin canals in the leaves, stem, and roots. It's the urushiol oil that is the problem as it binds to the skin and can cause an allergic reaction. This is called allergic contact dermatitis and is characterized by the streaks or lines of brushing up against something with the urushiol oil on it (such as damaged poison ivy leaflets).
The first time someone comes in contact with urushiol oil, they will not likely have a reaction. The immune system must be sensitized first. Now on the second or subsequent contacts, then a reaction is likely to occur (particularly for the 85% of us who are vulnerable). Children under 5 years of age are difficult to sensitize (not likely to have a reaction). You might consider consulting with a dermatologist or another physician to get a better handle on what the rash is. It could be hives or something else. The important thing though with all rashes is to make sure that your daughter is not scratching it. This can make matters worse.
Young skin is quite resilient. I would think with proper treatment, the rash will go away and any marks will fade. I am not a doctor though - consult a dermatologist for any concerns you have about your child's skin. |
