The idea behind hot showers is that you are causing a massive release of histamines (the cause of itching) and then depletion. So the feeling is of relief - the itch is gone for a period of time. BUT a release of histamines can also cause other effects such as hives. You don't want to take a shower so hot that there is damage to the skin. And you don't want to take a shower so hot if it causes other reactions such as hives. For a number of people, the hot shower treatment is a major relief and without much in the way of side-effect. As with so many things relating to rashes, treatments, and other things medical, it varies from person to person.

For those having problems with the hot showers, have you tried some of the other remedies that have been suggested on the board? I have read that ice packs can provide temporary itch relief and cold compresses is a recommended temporary treatment for hives.
