Hi Rebecca -

Ok - without picture this will be tougher but not impossible. You could start out by reviewing the pictures in the Is It Poison Ivy? section. We've seen a large number of plants posted from around the country so regional variations are generally covered there. There are a number of plants which have reddish leaves and/or new growth so that is a help but there are more identifiers to consider. I'm putting on some great new pictures today in the "Is It Poison Ivy?" section. Check the location of the pictures to find some that are near you. Poison ivy varies around the country. The white berries is important as that is a characterisitic of the poison trio (oak / ivy / sumac).

Also - there are a number of other plants known to cause dermatitis. It could be that your husband brushed a plant that is noxious to him. As we've heard from others on this board, some plants are harmless to many but cause servere contact dermatitis in others.

If you don't see pictures similar to the plants here on the site. Post a query back here on the board with more information particularly about what the leaves and/or leaflets look like as well as the stem. We'll help you out.
