Excellent questions. I wash my garden tools with just regular dish detergent and water. After a good wash in a big bucket, I then hose them down to make sure that everything is washed off. Lots of water is key here. You could use a solvent (like denatured alcohol) but make sure again to use lots of water (like hosing off) to make sure that everything is off the tools. I don't use solvents much as I don't like the smell or working with it (its a personal preference).
The generations question is an interesting one. I read about an experiment to determine "generations" of contact and it was astounding the results. A non-sensitive person had urushiol oil put on the thumb and pressed down on a sheet of paper. After 50 presses that person would touch a sensitive person. It was up to 1,000 presses before the urushiol oil lost its potency. This experiment was conducted by Dr. William Epstein, a noted expert in this field.
I would recommend cleaning any items the gloves came in contact with. If nothing more than wiping down with some wipes you've removed at least some of the oil that may be on that object. |
