Hi Ana -
I can't say why you are breaking out in an allergic rash (that's what a poison oak outbreak is - allergic contact dermatitis) and could be something other than urushiol oil (the secondary compound in a poison oak plant that most folks are allergic to). I do believe though that your dog is itching due to dry skin. Dogs have sensitive skin particularly the smaller breeds from what I understand. Washing 4 times in a week removes the natural oils in her skin and causes a dry condition. You might want to find some sort of moisturizing anti-itch cream suitable for her skin. FYI - the Tecnu primary ingredient is a solvent called mineral spirits (like paint thinner) which removes oils and has a drying effect, more so than just shampoo would. Take a look at this page: How Soap Works to see the differences between soaps and solvents and how they work in removing oil.
There are many theories about why other mammals do not seem to be allergic to urushiol oil. One of the theories is that the fur is thicker and so the oil does not get to the skin. Another theory is that the immune system is not so well developed in these other animals as it is for humans. I've read a few research papers which state categorically that only humans and primates can be allergic. To be honest, I don't know and I'm not convinced from the science I've read that only humans and higher primates can be allergic. I certainly understand the fur logic and have experienced first hand like many others how our pet dogs and cats enjoy sharing the great outdoors (including urushiol oil!) with us. |
