Can weeping from the lesions spread spread urushiol dermatitis? The American Academy Of Dermatology pamphlet Poison Ivy, Sumac & Oak states the following: p7. "If you do develop a rash, avoid scratching the blisters. Although the fluid will not spread the rash, fingernails may carry germs that could cause an infection." P 8. "Common Myths About Poison Ivy Scratching poison ivy blisters will spread the rash. This is not true. The rash is spread by urushiol on the hands - scratching the nose, for instance, or wiping the forehead - before blisters have formed." My copy of the pamphlet was copyrighted 1990 and revised 1991 and 1993 and is Form No. Pam11 - 6/93. American Academy of Dermatology 930 n. Meacham Road p.o. Box 4014 Schaumburg, il 60168-4014
