I am also VERY allergic to poison ivy and probably poison oak. I went down to the local Earl May garden store and requested something that would absolutely kill poison ivy. They recommended poison ivy and brush killer. This is supposed to kill the plant including the roots. We tried Round Up and it didn't phase the plants! Only time will tell how effective this will be. A few years ago I happened to pick up a leaflet published by the Missouri agricultural extension service. It stated that washing with soap and water could spread the oil and recommended washing with rubbing alcohol first to disolve the oil. I have been doing this since then and have not had poison since (knock on wood). Everytime I pet any of the neighbor's cats or dogs or if I do anything outside that may have been in contact with poison ivy/oak I immediately go inside and use the rubbing alcohol. I would be interested if anyone else has tried the alcohol as a preventative. |
