I just use soap and water. It cheaper
and works as well from my experience on things like tools, fur, and clothing. Tecnu's
active ingredient is mineral spirits. While I have placed tecnu
and paint thinner on myself, I would never on my beloved pet. Go figure!
Seriously, urushiol causes problems because of the bonding to the cell membranes. This isn't a problem with tools, fur, clothing, etc. So just use soap and water. See the following researcharticle for a nice description of how the oil binds and a discussion of tecnu.
According to the article,
"It was supposed to be stocked in fallout shelters across the United States. Later it was found to be highly effective in removing paint resins and, quite by accident, urushiol. [Tecnu is a crude distillate of gasoline and is quite expensive compared to other solvents such as gasoline, paint thinner and acetone.]".
Fascinating!
