Hi Nate - As I read your message I went "DOH!". I really meant to write poison oak in my reply to you but poison ivy just seems to be on my brain. What makes poison ivy and poison oak so nasty to us is that they both have urushiol oil so the rash and treatments would be the same. Poison oak prevalent in the western states and not so much here in the east (though we do have it in places).
What you've discovered is what makes treating poison oak so difficult - everyone's reaction is different. You just have to try until you find what works for you. As for the gasoline - that's some pretty nasty stuff here's an EPA fact sheet on gasoline

Gasoline is a solvent so you might consider an alternative such as rubbing alcohol.
