I agree that it sounds like Virginia Creeper. I've got a picture up on the website of Virginia Creeper here Virginia Creeper picture. This is a shot of a vine running along the ground. Virginia Creeper will grow up and along whatever it can find. It likes similar growing conditions to poison ivy and its not unusual to find the 2 growing side-by-side.
