I've found some pictures and taken additional which should help in identifying poison ivy in early spring. I'm located in USDA zone 6 (in northern Virginia) and the poison ivy plants have not begun to leaf. I've also noticed that Virginia Creeper has not begun to leaf out yet either. The vinca I've seen is a spring bloomer so that vine should be easy to identify. Here are some pictures of poison ivy vines with no leaves taken in early April:

Large vine with branches
Vine branch with leaf bud - no leaves yet
Begining to leaf out
Early summer poison ivy in with vinca vine

I find that poison ivy is easiest to identify in summer - those 3 leaves really stand out. In spring you have to look closely at the vine itself. Always work with gloves and clean up thoroughly after a day in the garden.

Hope this helps. And be sure to check out our pictures section.
